Activity Three: A Scavenger Hunt in Nature
Our third activity centers on the skill, Visualize it Richly and Colorfully. This skill is all about identifying vivid, rich, and colorful imagery in your surroundings. It is essential to be able to use vivid, rich imagery to convey ideas in any domain- whether you’re a scientist aiming to demonstrate your scientific discovery or an educator trying to stimulate new ideas in your students.
Your goal for this activity is to identify all the colors in your box of markers in nature! Here are your instructions or you can watch my family on this mission in this video.
1. Find a box of markers, crayons, or colored pencils. The more colors, the better! Have your child make a color key on a white sheet of paper.
2. Bring your markers and go on an outdoor adventure! It can be anywhere from your neighborhood, to a local park, to a nearby farm.
3. Have your child identify the colors they see from their color key and take a photo of each. Don’t go home until you have found all of the colors!
4. Print out all of the photos and have your child make a colorful collage!

Dr. Cyndi Burnett is the Director of Possibilities for Creativity and Education. Like her creativity-focused curriculum for students and teachers, Cyndi embraces the creative lifestyle that she teaches. You will often find her trying on new ideas, exploring resources to stretch her thinking, and being an advocate for playfulness and humor. Although she loves to research and write about creativity, Cyndi is a firm believer in field service. She has 20 years of teaching experience as an academic at the International Center for Studies in Creativity at SUNY Buffalo State where she instructed classes in creative-thinking and creative problem-solving.
